Copyright law in India is governed by the Copyright Act of 1957, which has been amended several times to keep up with changes in technology and international developments. The act defines copyright as a bundle of rights granted to creators of original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and cinematographic works.

Under the act, copyright protection is granted automatically to eligible works upon their creation. However, registration with the Copyright Office is encouraged as it serves as evidence of ownership and facilitates enforcement of copyright.

Copyright owners have the exclusive right to reproduce, publish, perform, communicate, and adapt their works. Any unauthorized use of copyrighted material, including copying, distribution, or public performance, may result in legal action, including injunctions, damages, and criminal sanctions.

The term of copyright protection varies depending on the type of work. For literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, copyright lasts for the lifetime of the author plus 60 years after their death. For cinematographic works, the term is 60 years from the date of publication. In the case of government works and works of international organizations, copyright protection lasts for 50 years from the date of publication.
